What is DDT?
DDT is an organic chemical compound that is colorless and only has a slight odor that was used in huge quantities during the 1940s-60s. It was the most effective pesticide for killing mosquitoes. DDT played a part in the eradication of malaria on some continents and a huge drop in the number of cases in others. After the war it was used around the world for agricultural use as well as pest prevention. It wasn't until the late 60s and early 70s that we knew what kind of effect it was having on our environment. Some bird species, especially raptors, were close to extinction due to the buildup of DDT in their system.
